RAF Cranwell Gliding Club's winch has a powerful 7.3 litre V8 engine driving two independant drums through an automatic gearbox and is powered using LPG.  The independant brakes on its two drums to allow one cable to be retrieve while the other drum can carry on launching. The cab is heated which really makes for a nice place to be on those cold winter days.  The winch is capable of launch gliders up to 2000 when the wind is reasonable an straight down the airfield.  Picture below shows it attached to its tractor that tows it to and from the hangar to its launch position.

G-BCKN

This is Cranwell's Tow plane, it is a Supermonk ( a Chipmonk 180hp Lycoming engine fitted) very useful for getting gliders to areas of lift or retrieving aircraft that have landed at other airfields.  A very popular aircraft amongst the tow pilots, particularly if they are asked to go a fetch someone back!

G-BUDA

This is Cranwell's Motor Glider the T61f  Venture.  The Motor Falke is extremely useful and is used generally for Field Landing Checks which all club pilots are required to undertake every year if they wish to fly cross country.  It provides numerous opportunities for both the experience and less experienced to practice field selection and approaches, as well as using navigation exercises to improve map reading skills
