Last of the Summer Sunshine
Rather than spending Friday night getting ready for the weekend, a small dedicated team of members took to the airfield so Cranwell Gliding Club could host the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Medical Centre, a fantastic charity that looks after wounded servicemembers. We welcomed 4 patients from the centre and flew them around the golden skies of Lincolnshire, all left grinning from ear to ear.
Saturday was a more hands on deck, with experienced duty pilot Webby taking the reigns of the airfield under the watchful eye of Mick Wood. Together, with the attending members, welcomed back students of the University of Nottingham, who were all flown. The club’s teamwork resulted in 67 launches, amassing a total flight time of 14hrs and 20mins! Particularly impressive now that the gliding season is coming to a close as the winter weather draws in.
Sunday was a lot more eventful, a challenge that Dave Chappell and Ron Beezer took head-on. There was a successful single seat conversion by Chris Harrington, with an even more impressive 51 minute solo. He was sadly forced to land as we were graced by a Spitfire flypast over the College Hall, not that anyone was left disappointed of course. Sunday ended in 47 launches and a total flight time of 9hrs 35mins. An impressive end to a fantastic soaring season.
